Legendary Story Hunts
Every legendary animal has its own story. Instead of a plain trail, a legendary expedition plays out in three chapters: two scenes that tell you what the animal has been up to, then its lair, where it waits in its own way.
Hunts with a story to tell. A torn-open cattle herd, a wrecked poachers' camp, a trapper who never got his rifle up. Each scene is staged in the world and every chapter comes with its own page of story.
🗺️ How a story hunt plays
- Take the hunt from a trapper's Legend Board, then set out from the Expeditions tab of the Hunter's Journal. The usual expedition rules apply: rank 5, standing in a region the animal roams, and once a day per animal. Story hunts show a Story hunt stamp, their title, a short tagline, the number of chapters and the reward.
- The intro. A story card opens with how the hunt began.
- Chapters I and II. Follow the signs to a scene: carcasses, a wrecked camp, sprung traps, torn brush. Hold Examine at the scene to read the chapter. The card also tells you which way the trail goes.
- Chapter III: the lair. The legend shows itself with a banner, and the lair is dressed for it. How it behaves depends on its story (see below).
- Bring it down. A Legend felled banner and a reward card appear. Skin it as usual for the legendary pelt.
The trail HUD shows the story title, the chapter you're on and a mark for each chapter.
🐾 Lair behaviour
| Behaviour | What happens |
|---|---|
sleeping | The legend is asleep in its lair and notices you later than usual. Get close, downwind, and make the first shot count |
feeding | It is busy at a kill, a little less alert than usual |
ambush | It waits out of sight near the lair and attacks once you walk in. An Ambush! banner warns you |
roaming | It moves around its ground as normal |
Some chapters and lairs also have poachers or rival hunters waiting, who have to be dealt with first.
Some legends are not alone: wolves around the Onyx Wolf, a herd around Tatanka, gators in the water with the Sun Gator. These guards are normal animals and can be skinned and sold like any other.

👥 Hunting a legend together
A hunting party shares the story: everyone gets the intro, the chapter cards and the lair. When the legend falls, every member within 150 metres (rewardRange) gets the story reward, and the hunt counts for them in the journal. That legend then goes on cooldown for each of them, the same as for the hunter who set out.
🔧 Configuration
Config.Legends in shared/config.lua:
| Option | Default | |
|---|---|---|
enabled | true | Turn story hunts off to go back to plain expedition trails |
timeout | 60 | Minutes the hunter has to finish the story |
distance | { min = 520, max = 820 } | How far the trail runs, in metres |
sceneRange | 90.0 | How close you need to be before a scene is staged |
markerRange | 40.0 | How close you need to be to see the scene marker |
ambushRange | 22.0 | How close to the lair an ambush is sprung |
ambushDistance | 30.0 | How far from the lair an ambushing legend hides |
sleepingAwareness | 0.6 | How much less a sleeping legend notices (0.6 is 60% of the usual range) |
rewardRange | 150.0 | How close party members must be to share the reward |
✍️ Writing your own stories
The easiest way is the in-game Hunt Editor. Stories and scenes also live in shared/legends.lua, which stays open to edit. A story's key must match a legendary id from shared/rare.lua. A legendary without a story still runs as a plain expedition trail.
A story
onyx_wolf = {
title = 'The Black Pack',
tagline = 'A wolf black as coal has been running down cattle in the high country.',
intro = 'Ranchers up in the Grizzlies swear a black wolf leads the pack...',
chapters = {
{ scene = 'dead_cattle', signs = 2, text = 'Two cows torn open and left...' },
{ scene = 'dead_trapper', signs = 2, text = 'A trapper, his rifle still loaded...' },
},
lair = { scene = 'feeding_ground', behaviour = 'feeding', guards = { models = { 'a_c_wolf' }, amount = { 2, 3 } }, text = 'You hear them before you see them...' },
reward = { cash = 30, xp = 180, items = { { item = 'part_tooth', amount = 4 } } },
},| Field | |
|---|---|
title | The story's name, shown on every card and the HUD |
tagline | One line for the Expeditions tab |
intro | The text on the first card |
chapters | Each chapter: the scene to stage, how many normal signs lead to it, and its text. Add as many as you like |
lair.scene | The scene staged at the lair (optional) |
lair.behaviour | sleeping, feeding, ambush or roaming |
lair.scenario | Optional animal scenario, for example WORLD_ANIMAL_BEAR_SLEEPING |
lair.guards | Optional animals around the legend: the models to pick from and a random amount between two numbers |
lair.text | The text shown when the legend appears |
encounter | Optional, on a chapter or the lair: the encounter waiting there |
reward | cash, xp and items (any item from your inventory) |
A scene
poacher_camp = {
bodies = { { models = { 'mp_g_m_m_animalpoachers_01' }, x = 1.5, y = 1.0, heading = 250.0 } },
props = {
{ models = { 'p_campfire01x' }, x = 0.0, y = 0.0 },
{ models = { 'p_bedrollopen01x' }, x = -2.2, y = 0.6, heading = 90.0 },
},
},x and y are offsets in metres from the middle of the scene. List more than one model and the first one your game build has is used. Bodies are only staged for the hunter, so they can't be skinned, carried or sold.
Admins can start any story hunt where they stand with /huntlegend <id>, for example /huntlegend bharati_grizzly. It skips the rank, region and cooldown checks, so it's handy for testing a story you wrote.
