Charges and the penal code

The court uses the same penal code as the police. With Kartik MDT running, every charge, jail time, fine and sentencing tier comes straight from the MDT, so the court and the police always see the same list. Without the MDT, the DOJ keeps its own penal code.

WhereWhat happens
Case → ChargesClerks (casesEdit) and prosecutors (prosecute) pick the charges on a case, with a count and a tier (for example "10+ grams")
Plea dealThe offer lists the charges the defendant pleads guilty to. Jail and fine fill in from the totals
VerdictA guilty verdict starts with the case's charges. Picking charges fills in jail, fine, probation and community service. The judge can still change any number
Criminal recordOne record per verdict or accepted plea, for example Armed Robbery (x1), Reckless Driving (x2) (Case #12), with the total jail and fine

Editing the penal code

Open Penal code on the tablet to browse every charge. Staff with penalCode can add, edit and delete charges, categories and sentencing tiers there. Changes save to the MDT's penal code, so police see them at once.

The court uses one MDT department's penal code. By default it finds the right one by itself, starting with the departments your DOJ job is assigned to in the MDT; admins can change it in /dojadmin → Settings (Configuration).

When the DOJ job is assigned to more than one MDT department, a department switcher appears on the Penal code page so staff can view and edit each one. The department marked used for charges is the one cases, plea deals and verdicts use.

Parole

A judge (or anyone with verdicts) releases a prisoner early under supervision from Corrections → Parole. Parole uses the same kiosk check-ins as probation.

Remand and prisoner transport

A defendant in the courtroom who gets jail time is not teleported to prison. After hearing the verdict they are taken to a holding cell and police get a prisoner-transport call. The sentence starts when they are brought to the prison intake, or by itself after timeoutMinutes. Set the intake in Config.Sentencing.remand.

Staff with supervise see everyone waiting for transport in Corrections and can book them.
